Thailand Breaks the Hula Hoop World Record

Hula Hoop World Record

Thailand broke the record for the most simultaneous hoop dancers on 12th February 2013 when 4483 school children, aged between 7 and 18 years old, hula hooped for seven minutes!

The feat took place in Thammasat University in Pathumthani, Thailand, in an open air stadium and attracted a large crowd. The participants numbered 5000 at the start but unfortunately 517 either stopped of dropped their hoop before the time was up. This made little difference in the grand scheme of things as the previous record, held by Taiwanese hoopers, only featured 2496 people. Not only did the Thai attempt smash the record in terms of numbers, they also destroyed the timing as well, increasing it from two minutes to seven.

The spectacle and record attempt was co-ordinated by the Thai Ministry of Health and aimed to raise awareness of the importance of keeping fit across Thailand. Mr Chonlanan Srikaew, Deputy of the Public Health Ministry’s Department of Health, said: “We want to improve the health of the Thai people. Hula hoop is very easy so people can exercise anytime and anywhere.”
